Elks Snapshot
Mrs. Delaney's first-grade scientists used their observation skills to record properties of a rock. They observed the size, weight, shape, texture, and color of their rock with partners. We learned about proper handling of our science tools needed to complete this investigation, such as, tape measures, scales, and magnifying glasses.

Some visuals from yesterday's competition in Watertown! The high school band members prepare music from January-February for the region's solo & ensemble contest. They choose to work as either a solo or a group (or both!) and have class time to prepare this music together. This is done mostly on their own with guidance from their director.

Another BIG congratulations to our students who earned Superior Ratings at yesterday's Region 3 Ensemble and Solo Competition in Watertown!
5 groups/solos made up of 19 students received a superior rating from their judges (pictured with their pins) with one of those students, Josclynn Schomp, receiving a PERFECT score on her solo!
We are proud of our musicians and the work they put into this music! Next, they will begin working on their Region Large Group Contest music.

Congratulations to Elkton HS students, Bryn Bevers and Becca Armstrong, who were selected to play at the SDUS Honor Band Festival this weekend!
The Honor Band Festival is a tremendous opportunity for student musicians to rehearse and perform in the Oscar Larson Performing Arts Center at SDSU, work with nationally and internationally renowned guest artists and clinicians, and have a great time sitting alongside some of the most talented high school musicians in the upper Midwest.
The director first nominates the students and then they put together an audition comprised of scales and a short solo excerpt which is recorded and sent in for judges. This year, Elkton had 4 students nominated and auditioned and two students were selected to participate on bass clarinet.
Awesome job, Bryn & Becca!

Next up on Tails from School: Meet Bertram, Ms. Lynn's 8 month old pup!

A BIG congratulations to our Educator’s Rising program, which sent 5 students to the State Conference in Spearfish over the weekend! Advisor Mrs. Jaacks shared a little about the program for those who may not be familiar with it:
“Elkton High School added a new Career and Technical Student Organization this school year: Educators Rising. A group designed to encourage young people to enter the teaching profession. In this first year, 18 E-LB high school students joined the organization and 5 were able to attend and complete at the State Conference in Spearfish."
At the Conference, Evie Foss received a silver rating on her "teacher created" project, showcasing a Bingo game she created to help students learn and practice skills in showing respect. Samantha Stein, Gabby Meja, Kelsi Barthel, and Faith Jaacks all received gold ratings on the educational bulletin board projects.
Way to go, girls! And thank you to Mrs. Jaacks, who gave a lot of time and effort to help get the new program off and running. It’s been another fun opportunity for our students to do great things beyond the classroom!

Elks Snapshot:
Mr. Erickson's Engineering class recently competed with one another in the Balloon-Powered Car Engineering Challenge.
Their mission: Design and build a car powered only by air from a balloon that travels as far and as smoothly as possible. The goal was to ultimately better understand force, motion, and Newton's Laws. Students were taught that good engineers don’t just build — they test, improve, and redesign!

Today we’re shining a spotlight on 3rd grade teacher, Mrs. Anderson! This is her third year in Elkton, and she loves seeing her students get excited about what they’re learning. Mrs. Anderson’s favorite meal is her mom’s spaghetti, and she thinks everyone should read the Harry Potter series at least once. We assume she has great taste in music, as she knows all the lyrics to the Nelly classic, “Air Force Ones.” Nature is something that inspires her, and Audible is the most used app on her phone. Thank you, Mrs. Anderson, for all the amazing things you do for your students and the Elkton School District each day!

The Elkton-Lake Benton Minecraft team made the schools first-ever appearance at the E-Spots State Tournament last weekend in Aberdeen! They played well, but came up short of placing. Coach Zubke shared, "the team had a great time and are definitely ready to continue and play there next year and to continue scrimmaging against other schools until then." Congratulations to the Minecraft squad and the rest of the Elks E-Sports team on a fantastic inaugural season!
